Vicious and valuable lesson from the Vince McMahon documentary

Long before UFC was a thing all that was known to the world was World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) or WWF for the OGs. Kids grew up watching it, getting injured imitating the wrestlers, dressing up as them for halloween and what not. Even though the “real” wrestling did exist at the time but it was in the shadows for the same reason that holds true till today in nearly all aspects of life one can think of – dating, relationships, politics, business, sales etc etc etc.. the vicious bulletproof reason being

“The one who entertains wins”

You’re on a date, you have to keep the conversation going. And being boring would be sin #1. Keep them interested, grab their attention but more importantly, keep them engaged. No one wants a second date with someone not interesting.

You’re pitching a product for sale, the customer is already pissed by someone trying to lure them into spending money so if you’re not amusing you might get the finger (literally).

Watch any of Apples WWDC events or when they reveal their new products. The first thing they do which the great Steve Jobs started was – being entertaining.

Even in politics, specially in this age of social media the one who is more charming and captivating wins.

To make a sale, pitch an idea, win an election or to get your second date the first and foremost step is to be entertaining and keeping their attention.

Coming back to Vince,

The guy is an absolute workaholic, super competitive and would go any lengths for his business but yet the most important trait he has is entertainment. He realised what was selling, capitalised on that, did not care what the audience thought of him. All he cared was about the dollars coming in.

Think about it, he even went to the lengths to involve his family in the storylines, often becoming the center of public hatred. Being booed by tens of thousands of spectators, accused of exploiting his employees, almost getting arrested and what not. Yet what he saw in all of that was OPPORTUNITY. He converted all of them to views, making more money than before. Silencing his competitors who never really got to the same level as WWE till date.

People do not care if it is scripted, fake. What they care about is getting entertained for worth the money and time they have spent on it. Period.

“Being entertaining trumps all !!!!!!”
