My case for Freelancing

As someone who has been doing freelance work since the last 3.5 years, I would like to weigh in my 2 cents on its pros. I’ll be making my case “against” it as well in the next blog, but for now we’ll focus on the pros.

#1 Freedom – I’ll start with the one thing I love the most about it i.e freedom. You’re not subject to live in a particular city, state or even country. Being someone who loves travelling freelancing allowed me to visit 12 countries and make infinite memories and friends all over the globe. As long as you have your toolkit you can work from anywhere in the world and that has to be undoubtedly the #1 thing about freelancing.

#2 Work Hours – Now this depends from organisation to organisation. Some require you to work a specific schedule as it is constraint to other team members. However I realised once you have gained enough experience and have a relationship with the organisation they trust you to choose your own work hours and get the job done.

#3 Confidence – In most cases, you’ll be working alone. Yes, you’ll be at the comfort of your home but you won’t have the leisure to walk to your seniors and ask for help(at least not in person). Eventually you’ll become more confident, your ability to solve issues yourself will augment.

#4 Persona – When you’re working for an organisation it is not very easy to build your own persona and presence online amongst the industry. Let’s face it. How many people who work regular jobs think of building their own website for their portfolio etc? I can bet it’s not more than 30%. But when you’re doing freelance work, it is kind of needed to have your own standing in the industry for clients to trust you and your work.

I can think of many more but these are the top 4 for me.

Like a coin there are 2 sides to freelancing as well. I’ll write about the cons in the next article soon….
